The Right Way to Communicate With Buyers On Fiverr: Dos & Don’ts

We have all heard it.

Communication is an essential life skill and it’s equally true for freelance platforms like Fiverr and Upwork.

When I first started offering services on Fiverr, I missed a lot of good opportunities just because of my bad communication skills.

Buyers would inbox and I would respond with irrelevant things that would ultimately scare them, or maybe bore them. They never told which one!

In this article, I’m going to share everything about communicating with buyers on Fiverr and other freelance platforms that I have learned throughout my freelance journey. Specifically, we will talk about how to engage your clients and take the lead in the conversation. Ultimately, it will help convince your clients to agree to the quotes and place their orders.

To break it down, we will assume TWO scenarios:

  1. When you are dealing with a buyer for the very first time
  2. When you are dealing with a client that you’ve previously worked with

Communicating With First-Time Buyers On Fiverr

Whenever a buyer sends you a message on Fiverr, here’s what you need to keep in mind while replying:

  • The buyer only knows what you’ve written on your profile and Gig Description
  • You are the expert and professional here
  • The buyer needs help and you’re basically solving their problem

As you can see, you have quite a good weightage and that’s exactly what you need to wear. Greet your buyer in a confident manner and avoid terms like sir and ma’am. Instead, refer to them by their names.

However, if you want to make it look more professional or if you are working in a formal niche, then it’s a good idea to add Mr. or Miss before their name. It leaves a good impression on the buyer.

To make it clearer, let me share a few examples from my Fiverr inbox.

As you can see, I have responded with some authority here and asked a question at the end to engage the buyer.

Again, I have asked a quick question to engage the buyer. The client doesn’t care whether or not you greet them. All they care about is the underlying task and that’s what you need to focus on.

This straightforward technique helps me generate thousands of dollars each month from Fiverr. If you are new to Fiverr and struggling to get your first order, here’s my step-by-step technique to kickstart your Fiverr Journey.

Now that you’ve got the attention of the buyer, show them that you are interested in the task and you can perform it with perfection. Here’s how you can do that:

  1. Start by asking questions regarding the project. The way they answer will give you an idea about how much they know about the underlying task. If they don’t have any idea, communicate precisely and don’t use unnecessary jargon. If they know exactly what they need, you can impress them by using relevant terminologies and specific jargon.
  2. Don’t hesitate to ask for additional details and files that might help you understand the project better
  3. Most Fiverr buyers talk to multiple sellers simultaneously in order to pick the right seller. Be that “right seller” by responding timely and precisely.

However, when a buyer asks you a question and you don’t have the right answer, don’t just respond quickly just because you have to. Look up the answer on the web or ask someone and respond with the correct answer. Remember that you will give a skeptical impression by stating the wrong answer.

Once you have convinced the buyer that you are the right professional to do the job, it’s time to discuss MONEY!

Negotiating the Price

To start with, don’t ask every client how much budget they have. Most likely, they will respond with $5 or $20 and you will be in an awful situation to ask for $100 or $500. Instead, here’s how to negotiate price with your first-time Fiverr buyers:

Initiate the price negotiation by giving a number that is not too low and not too high for the task. For example, if you typically charge $100 for the same tasks, you can give your quote with something like “I typically charge $140 for such tasks. However, since it is our first collaboration, let’s keep the budget $120”. The client will either accept the offer or give a counteroffer of $100 or $80. Note that if you go with a much higher quote let’s say $200 or $250, it may demotivate the client and they will stop responding.

Therefore, always give a competitive and balanced offer so that to gain an edge over other sellers.

Communicating With Familiar Fiverr Buyers

These buyers are easy to communicate with since they are already aware of your competence. Whenever they approach you for a new task, be responsive and give them detailed answers regarding the new tasks.

They are also the best clients to go to when you don’t have active orders. There always comes a time in your freelance journey when you struggle to get new orders. It usually lasts between 10-30 days and that’s when you can cash these buyers.

If you have worked with a buyer previously and the buyer is still actively hiring (you can check that from their profile reviews), you can send them a message as a reminder of who you are and what type of projects you can help them with.

To do that, go to your “completed orders” page and contact active buyers. Start with greeting and remind them of your previous collaboration. Then move on to explaining how you can help them and offer them various discounts that might intrigue them.

Moreover, you can send cards and wishes to your previous clients to be in their limelight. Here’s an example:

These communication techniques will ultimately help you get tons of orders and become a successful Fiverr freelancer. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comment section below!

Hi John, could you please specifically mention the issue? Creating a seller account on Fiverr is a smooth process – Unlike other platforms like UpWork.

Should I ask or give external contact link or email on Fiverr? How do they basically detect whether or I have done such thing? Bundle of thanks!!
